The Sounds of the Past

Mariana Lopez (Lecturer in Sound Production and Post Production)
Studies on past cultures have often focused on recreating visual aspects, leaving aside the importance of historical soundscapes. Mariana will be introducing the acoustic measurement techniques used to capture the sounds of existing buildings and how we can use computer models to recreate the acoustics of spaces that no longer exist. We will be listening to modern recordings that sound as if they had been performed in heritage sites and we will be immersing ourselves in 16th century York!

What do audience faces tell us about their experience of artistic performances?

Nick Barraclough (Senior lecturer in psychology, University of York)
Gaining an understanding of audience members’ experiences of artistic performances is notoriously difficult. Self-reports can be biased, whilst physiological measures are invasive and detract from the performance. During artistic performances, the emotions being experienced are reflected in changes in the facial expressions. I will discuss recent research where we film the faces of audiences, and then analyse using machine learning techniques what they are doing with their faces during performances, to try to derive information about audience emotional experiences of artistic performances.
