Strings, Particles and Black Holes

String theory is a candidate theory of quantum gravity, marrying quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory of gravity. Despite its speculative status, its impact is being felt across theoretical physics. I will discuss an idea that originated in string theory, and is bringing a new light into Einstein’s theory. The idea is that gravity is the “square” of an electromagnetism-type theory. In this sense, a black hole is the “square” of a charged particle. In my research, I try to find out what this really means, and how theorists can use it.

Quantum gravity theories, such as String theory, are candidate theories for a so-called “Theory of Everything”, which unifies matter, forces, and space-time. Confirmation of the presence of such theory is a goal of modern science and the dream of Einstein and Hawking. Recently the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica discovered the ultra-high-energy astrophysical neutrinos from distant galaxies. These neutrinos turned out to be the best tool to explore the space-time properties. In this talk, I discuss the state-of-the-art effort to study space-time properties by neutrinos.
