Join us as we showcase some of the amazing work that PhD students at Swansea University are currently exploring.
One talk will explore how waste plastic can be converted into what is regarded as the strongest material in the world, carbon nanotubes. Another will explore head impact and concussions in rugby, specifically gender differences and how we can develop appropriate management strategies for the sport.

From Waste Plastics to Carbon Nanotube Cables
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extraordinary electrical and mechanical properties, and they are often regarded as the strongest material in the world, and they conduct electricity. For example, they have 1,000 times the current capacity compared to copper. But how can we make them in sustainable way? This presentation will give you a brief introduction on our latest research-using waste materials to make high-valued carbon nanotubes for electrical wires for your headphones or your ethernet cables at home.

There is increasing evidence of a link between repeated head impacts, and short- and long-term changes to brain health. This talk will highlight some of our latest research that used intelligent mouthguards, novel neck strength testing apparatus and player interviews, to investigate how concussion experiences differ between genders. We hope that this research will be used to develop appropriate concussion management strategies for women’s rugby players, but also that these investigations in rugby can be used to inform other areas.
