Tonight we will be discovering the inner workings of the LOFAR sky survey and exploring the innovations behind the Moon landings through the medium of advanced Lego simulations - yes you read that correctly. Two amazing researchers will be joining us to provide an insight into both the high-flying legacy and fast paced development of the role of technology in astronomy. Come down to the 32 Below for what promises to be a fun and informative evening with the cutting edge of science on full display - and, of course, a pint!

We're going to the Moon - I'll bring the Lego

Dr Alastair Bruce (Astronomer, The University of Edinburgh)
Only 24 humans have ever gone to the Moon. Only twelve of those have walked on the surface of our nearest neighbour. One brought some tartan along for the ride. Join us on a journey with a space-race geek who never got to see a Saturn V fly and still won't forgive himself for missing a Space Shuttle launch. How did we do it? Why did we do it? What the heck does "SCE to AUX" mean?

Unveiling the radio Universe with LOFAR

Lara Alegre (PhD Student, The University of Edinburgh)
radio astronomy revolution is here, and it is revealing a Universe as never seen before. LOFAR, a new generation of radio telescope, has been mapping the sky at meter wavelengths, detecting hundreds of thousands of previously unknown galaxies, most of them hosting supermassive black holes. At the Royal Observatory Edinburgh we are leading breakthrough science towards understanding a black hole's role in the evolution of galaxies and the Universe itself. Discover the first (and brand new) LOFAR release, which is cooperation of more than 200 astronomers from 18 countries, including the UK.
