The human body is a world of intricacies and oddities, making human beauty not just skin deep. In partnership with the British Heart Foundation, we welcome Dr. Marc Dweck and Prof. Rustam Salman to discuss how cutting-edge imaging technologies are enabling us to understand more about the inner workings of our bodies than ever before. But be warned these images are not always that of absolute health and wellbeing.

As a breather we’ll also be getting interactive with a live dissection of the heart — not for the faint-hearted!

Picturing the heart in 2020

Dr Marc Dweck (BHF Senior Lecturer and Consultant Cardiologist at University of Edinburgh)
@marc dweck
We will discuss innovative methods for imaging the heart using new types of state of the art scanners. With this technology it is now possible to take pictures of the heart quickly and non-invasively without the need to insert any tubes into the heart. This can provide us with detailed information about the structure of the heart, how it is pumping and whether disease processes are active. Pioneering research is occurring in Edinburgh and around the world trying to understand how these beautiful images can be translated in to improvements in patient care and outcomes.

Imaging your brain: not everything in black and white makes sense

Professor Rustam Salman (Chair of Clinical Neurology)
Afraid of stroke, dementia, brain tumours and MS? Yep, concerns about the brain are on everyone’s minds. Advanced MRI scans help us understand the brain and they’re more available than ever. So surely you should have a check up? Well if you do, you’re playing brain MRI roulette! Ignorance might be bliss…
