The more you know about how your body works, the better you can take care of it. But it isn't always that simple and often the body goes through a colossal amount of changes. Tonight we will hear from two researchers who will take a different approach to understanding our body. First, we will hear a talk on a different approach to addressing eating disorders and body image in schools. We will then hear how metabolism and diet may impact on the body.

A different approach to addressing eating disorders and body image in schools

Niamh Ni Shuilleabhain (PhD Student)
School-based body image programmes are typically psychologically informed, teaching young people how to control their individual thoughts and behaviours. However, it can be difficult for adolescents to have such control when under immense social pressures. My workshops in schools attempt to move away from individualised approaches towards trying to change the way we collectively learn about and come to understand our bodies in school. We spend less time on media literacy and more time questioning the pervasive myths and stigma surrounding weight.

Dr James Betts is a Reader in Nutrition, Metabolism at The University of Bath's Department for Health. James was awarded the 2015 Cuthbertson Medal for his research into breakfast and health. His wider research programme covers all aspects of meal timing and recently has explored biological rhythms throughout the night. During his talk James will consider a wide range of factors that may link when we eat to metabolic health.
