Saving the World One Piece of Plastic at a Time

Professor Michael Shaver (Professor of Polymer Science)
David Attenborough in Blue Planet II did what many polymer scientists in my field have been trying to do for years: Convince the public and government that the challenges of plastic waste are real and need to be fixed. This talk will explore the complex nature of our plastic environment, the inter-dependency of plastics on our goals for lowering our carbon footprint and increasing our expected lifespan, while also showcasing our own work on how polymer chemistry has the opportunity to shape a new sustainable future by developing interdisciplinary solutions that work for all actors.

Biodegradable Plastics: Part Solution or Part of the Problem?

Prof Mark Miodownik (Professor of Materials & Society)
Biodegradable plastics are growing in popularity however most end up in landfill or being burnt as current facilities cannot deal with them. The danger of growing the biodegradable plastic sector is that it can and does divert organisations from adopting more environmental approaches to plastic packaging such as designing for reduction, reuse and recycling. This talk discusses the technical and cultural issues about doing the right thing for the environment, particularly in regard to the biodegradable plastics sector, and welcomes audience participation and debate.
