Our landscapes are continually changing, our world doesn't look like what it used to. Whether through natural processes or human design, many changes in our landscape go unnoticed, but some can have disastrous consequences. Join us for an evening of talks by Dr David Milledge and Sam Graham. As David takes us on a tour of what we know and don't know and what we can learn from disastrous events like Earthquakes and landslides, and Sam uses science to help us understand the risks and benefits of the emotionally charged issue of fracking .

The Fracking Fracas – What is it all about?

Sam Graham (PhD student, Newcastle University)
Fracking is an emotionally charged issue for many, for some it has necessary economic benefits, for others it presents huge public and environmental risks. Come and learn more about this controversial process as Sam Graham helps us understand: What benefits fracking can bring; the risks to public and the environment; and how much we really know and can control to reduce these risks.

When Land Slides

Dr David Milledge (Assistant Professor in the Geography Department, Durham University)
Landslides are both fascinating and destructive: fascinating, for their apparent consistency of behaviour, yet our continued inability to predict them; destructive, because of their energy once on the move.
I will take you on a tour of what we know about landslides focussing on the earthquakes in Wenchuan, China, in 2008 and Gorkha, Nepal, in 2015 in particular and on how this knowledge is (or isn’t) useful, usable and used in informing decisions both in the everyday and when disaster strikes.
