Re-thinking efficiency for the future

For much of the 20th century, the belief that the corporation must be “economically efficient” has been a tenet of capitalism. This idea has been used to justify the practice of outsourcing public services to private providers because the market is assumed to be more efficient at delivering services than the state. Has this simplistic argument gone too far? What do we mean when we talk about efficiency? How might we re-think efficiency for the future? Let's explore how we might transform ourselves and organizations to be better at efficiency and celebrate the benefits of inefficiency!

This talk considers the problem of control in open-source software. It aims to map what is controlled, how, and with what consequences for the community and software evolution. We explore these questions leveraging naturally-occurring data from the ‘Linux Kernel’ project, integrating deep learning with a qualitative enquiry. The project offers momentum on how control is enforced by independent or organisational agents not bound by any employment relationships and that pursue different goals.
