Technology, artificial intelligence and virtual reality! In this event we will hear about how virtual reality can be used to explore the past by reading ancient writings on clay tablets, as well as how we can predict diseases using artificial systems! Come along to learn more about technology and how it can help us, see how you can get involved in re-building ancient tablets, and be in with a chance to win some prizes!
Virtual archaeology and ancient beer
Dr Sandra Woolley
(Senior Lecturer in Computing)
Dr Tim Collins
(Senior Lecturer in Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
Cuneiform was humankind’s earliest writing. Dating back five thousand years, cuneiform was written by making impressions in clay “tablets”. Beginning as simple pictures impressed in the clay, the writing evolved into a sophisticated form of communication for different languages. We can now create virtual 3D forms of these clay tablets and learn about the life and culture of the very first cities… and about the importance of beer in early civilisation!
Can you trust Artificial Intelligence?
Dr Allison Gardner
(Lecturer in Bioinformatics)
Artificial intelligence is creating a lot of excitement and many businesses, councils and governments are keen to use it to become more efficient. However artificial intelligence algorithms do not always do what they are meant to do, they can cheat and they can discriminate. This talk will give examples of badly behaved algorithms and explain how and why bias can be built in to cause discrimination and what we can do about it.
