Onwards to the ice giants
Dr Leigh Fletcher
(Royal Society Research Fellow and Associate Professor, University of Leicester)
The Juno spacecraft is currently sending back exquisite photographs of Jupiter’s swirling atmosphere. Cassini met its demise as a fireball in the skies of Saturn after an unprecedented 13 years of exploration. Our next mission to Jupiter, JUICE, is due for launch in 2022. But what’s in store for our intrepid robotic explorers as they reach for the distant Ice Giants? In this talk we reveal why Uranus and Neptune are targets for future exploration of our Solar System, and how an ambitious international mission to these worlds will – hopefully – soon become a reality.
BepiColombo: Europe’s mission to Mercury
Dr Simon Lindsay
(Researcher, University of Leciester; Operations Scientist on MIXS)
On October 20th last year, BepiColombo, a 4-ton spacecraft built through collaboration between Europe and Japan, was launched to begin its six and a half year journey to Mercury. On board is MIXS, an X-ray imager designed and built in Leicester, which will answer questions about Mercury’s surface, composition and formation. This talk will cover Mercury, the BepiColombo spacecraft, the MIXS instrument and the unique challenges facing the mission as it operates in an incredibly hostile environment.
