Join us for an evening of cutting-edge science as we explore the problems with misbehaving trees and how metal, microbes, and plant-based diets are not as unrelated as you may think!

Utilising a novel technique to inhibit plant root growth and ingress into waste water pipe networks

Cian Rynne (PhD Candidate)
A common and expensive problem in the UK and most temperate climates is the constant maintenance and upkeep required to repair and maintain waste water pipe networks, one of the most frequent damaging actors is ingress from tree roots.
This project seeks to rectify this issue in an environmentally sustainable way.

A Metal, A Microbe and a Cellular Vitamin Factory

Dr Tessa Young (Research Fellow)
Vitamin B12 is one of only a few essential nutrients which cannot be obtained from plant-based diets, presenting a challenge for sustainable future food supply. B12 also, critically, contains metal (yes, there is metal in you!).
Join us tonight to explore how living cells use metallic elements to sustain the reactions of life; discover how microorganisms can be used as ‘green cell factories’ to produce high value chemicals (such as vitamin B12) for a sustainable future; and examine a day in the life of an inorganic biochemist.
