Lessons from Formula1

Paolo Aversa (Lecturer in Strategy)
Did you know that each bus in London has (at least) one component coming from Formula 1? And that children hospitals use Formula 1 telemetry systems to monitor their patients’ state of health? For more than half a century technologies and solutions derived from Formula 1 made their way into our everyday life. Also, Formula 1, the most famous and prestigious car racing competition, has been recently used to derive managerial lessons for other industries. This talk will explore why Formula 1 has been defined as “the scream of science”, and how its impact goes way beyond the racetrack.

Lessons from the America’s Cup

Jan-Michael Ross (Assistant Professor in Management )
While the British America’s Cup challenger is currently preparing on the waters of Portsmouth for the upcoming sailing races to win and bring the cup back home to Britain, many businesses are challenged by facing environments that are highly competitive and unpredictable. Are there parallels between sailing and competing in dynamic business environments? What can business leaders learn from boat races? This talk will share research insights for businesses from the analysis of GPS-data from the America’s Cup World Series.
