Keeping In Time With Our Body Clock
Greg Atkinson
(Teesside University - Professor of Health Sciences and Biostatistics Research)
Like almost all other animals, humans have evolved a body clock that helps to control daily fluctuations in body functions. How does this body clock impact human health and functioning? What happens to the body clock when it is disrupted by shift-work and long-haul flights that cross several world time zones? We will also look at the various proposed ‘cures’ for the resulting feelings of ‘jet lag’ that most people have experienced when travelling on business or on holiday.
Regenerative Medicine and Biomimetics
Safwan Akram
(Teesside University - Senior Lecturer in Biologics & Process Engineering Simulation)
Gave your heart to the wrong person? Don’t worry, we can make a new one for you in the laboratory. Learn the potential of regenerative medicine to provide answers for regenerative diseases. Come and see how engineers are learning from human bodies and animals to improve upon products. Come to the talk and get drunk on technology!
From Zero to Hero
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a superhero? Time travel, super strength, stretching, and laser vision all sound good, but how would our bodies have to adapt to these powers? Come found out!
