This talk will be taking your gaze skywards and to the stars. Hear from our Physics and Astronomy researchers as they take you on a journey from the wondrous Aurora Borealis and then into far space to look at the journey of a galaxy.
Why do we care about galaxies?
Dr. Noelia E. D. Noël
(Lecturer in Astrophysics)
Very often people ask me "Why do you do Astronomy?" or "Why do you study galaxies?". To be totally fair, the question is very valid. It is a cool subject and surely very fascinating, but.... why to spend time, efforts and money studying something that is so abstract and unreachable?
In this presentation I will (try to) convince the audience that we actually need astronomy and, in particular, we need galaxies. I will show the captivating journey our own galaxy and its neighbours took from the very beginning of the Universe up until today.

Aurora: the greatest show on Earth
Dr Heather Campbell
(Outreach Officer)
Last year I was lucky enough to visit Iceland to search for the elusive northern lights - or the Aurora Borealis. In this talk we'll explore this elusive phenomena. How it has wows people to as long as civilisation as existed. As well as, the science which causes these beautiful dancing lights.
