From radio telescopes to world class facilities we will show you many ways to detect small stars and small planets otherwise imperceptible. Come and join us to hear about it over a pint!

Pint of Science goodies to be won during the night!

Mapping the universe with radio telescopes

Dr Phil Bull (Lecturer in Cosmology)
@philipbull
Radio telescopes allow us to see the unseen in the Universe. A new generation of extremely large radio telescope arrays are currently being built across the world that will finally be sensitive enough to make gigantic 3D maps of the cosmos, and detect the incredibly faint signals from the very first stars and galaxies. I'll explain how they will do it, and what we can expect to learn from these giant cosmic maps.

Terrestrial planets under red suns

Dr Guillem Anglada (Lecturer in Astronomy, School of Physics and Astronomy)
@GuillemAnglada
When looking at our galactic neighbourhood, most stars are small, cooler and redder than our Sun. These are the red dwarfs. Because of their size and faintness, small temperate planets possibly similar to Earth can be more easily detected orbiting them. Despite these worlds are likely to be alien to Earth life, we are investigating their atmospheres for exotic chemistry and life. We'll talk about how we find them using world class facilities and pro-am contributions worldwide (Red Dots initiative),and what it is the likelihood of detecting life beyond our Solar System within the next decade.
