Little Lab of Horrors: Carbon nanodots and plant transformation
Katie Higginbottom (Doctor of Philosophy Student)
Plant transformation is the act of altering the DNA of a plant. This will be crucial in fighting future threats from bioterrorism, climate change, and epidemic disease. Our lab has (accidentally) invented a way to transform plants by simply spraying plants with a mixture of DNA and carbon nanoparticles (that just means “really tiny bits of burnt sugar”). Our new method makes plant transformation really easy, really fast, and really cheap. Let me tell you all about this crazy, incredible new method that genuinely starts with putting an orange in a Tesco microwave for three minutes.
