Western economies are going through radical changes. The line between private and public, personal and common, work and leisure is blurring. What does this mean for our daily lives? During this evening we will look at the challenges of market innovations.

What’s the new political responsibility of corporations?

Mislav Radic (PhD Student in Management)
Privatisation has been one of the most radical economic policies around the world. However, in recent years public debates have started challenging the assumption that privatisations are essentially beneficial, questioning both the actual ‘improvements of performances’ and the legitimacy of these companies to provide public services. However, new internet giants (e.g Facebook) have developed private services with public characteristics. We will try to understand and discuss the new boundaries of public and private, and what is the new political role/responsibility of corporations.

Job-for-life or job-for-tonight? The uberisation of work

Alessandro N. Tirapani (PhD Student in Management)
Precarious work is getting more and more common, especially among young people. On one hand, companies like Uber and Deliveroo offer on-demand job opportunities with little to no social security. On the other, job contracts tend to get shorter and shorter, with growing periods of low-paid training. In this speech, we look at the specific case of interns in Brussels, the heart of the European Union. We will try to understand how young people cope with this precariousness.
