The CRISPR revolution in genetic therapies

Prof. Stephen Hart (Professor in Molecular Genetics)
Genetic diseases affect more than 30 million people world-wide and for most of them there are no treatments available. Most genetic diseases are caused by mutations in the DNA producing faulty proteins. CRISPR is a new way to approach gene therapy that acts like a pair of molecular scissor, making breaks in the DNA, which allows disease-causing mutations to be repaired precisely. However there are risks of accidental side-effects and even of misuse. Information and debate is essential to determine what risks are acceptable, and how CRISPR should be best used for the benefit of mankind.
