Food production appears to be robust, unchangeable and undeterred by the occasional environmental curveball thrown at it. But this is far from the case. Plant disease causing pathogens; some re-emerging old foes and some new faces from distant shores are threatening global food security. From bread to biscuits, from pasta to pastry, we rely heavily on cereals in our daily diet. We ask two plant pathologists can we stop these cereal killers? If we can’t, what is the cost?

Yellow Rust: The Story Of A Crop Invader

Pilar Corredor-Moreno (PhD student)
Why are we under attack? Is wheat production really threatened? Why should I care about wheat pathogens? Come to Pilar’s talk to find the answer to these questions! She’s a plant scientist working on crop responses to rust and she will tell us more about how cereal rusts are threatening global agriculture.

Stem rust: a repeat offender in the UK

Dr Antoine Persoons (Post-doctoral Scientist)
Romans would pray to the God Robigus to keep crop diseases away from their fields. But, after all these centuries, are we any better off? We managed to keep stem rust away from the UK for decades, so why is it back? Antoine will tell us more about the comeback of one of the major cereal killers in history.
