Do workers benefit from financial innovations?

Dr Anastasia Richmond (Lecturer in Finance at Bayes Business School, City, University of London)
The financial market is constantly evolving and producing new financial instruments each decade. You may think that only big corporations should care about financial innovations. But what do they mean for regular people? And more importantly, can financial innovations affect your life? We examine how workers’ well-being can be affected by trading of financial derivatives associated with their employer. Are financial derivatives the “weapons of mass destruction” as once suggested by Warren Buffet? Come and find out during my talk.

Do Workers Pay a Cost for Product Market Competition? Evidence from Antitrust Investigations

Dr Giacinta Cestone (Associate Professor of Finance, Bayes Business School, City, University of London)
Do lower consumer prices come to the detriment of workers’ welfare or shareholder value? To shed light on this question, we study how firms manage their labour force when antitrust investigations cause cartels to break down. We find that after cartel investigations open in their industries, firms engage in a brief but intense period of labour restructuring. How bad are the implications for employment? And do stockholders share the burden of these antitrust shocks? Come to my talk to find out!
