How often do you use social media, such as Facebook and Twitter? How much of what we post is a true representation of our lives, precariously managed to project a certain image? You may have heard the bad press social media gets: a distraction from work, the constant quest for the perfect photo/selfie. Social media is changing not only the way we communicate, but the way we live our lives.

Jumping the curve: "Mixed Methods" in Social Media research
Shriram Venkatraman
(PhD student)
This talk is about the strategy of how we jumped to the next big curve of research techniques, namely "Mixed Methods". While quantitative is always pitched against qualitative, we will explore how our strategy of situating quantitative results within a qualitative framework in cross-cultural surveys on social media provided us with some fascinating discoveries and insights.
The Anthropology of Social Media
Professor Daniel Miller
(Professor of Anthropology)
This talk tells the story of how nine anthropologists simultaneously carried out 15 months ethnographic studies in 9 communities in 8 countries around the world (there were two in China) in order to study the use and consequences of social media and answer some basic questions, such as:- What is social media? Are they different in different regions of the world? Are they platforms or content? Are they just a form of communication or in some sense a place in which we now live? Be prepared to meet a very very different kind of science.
