Viruses are still one of the biggest mysteries of our age. Tonight’s talks feature perhaps one of the most infamous – HIV – and where we are with our counter-attack

Why haven’t we cured HIV yet?

Dr Hendrik Huthoff
More than 30 years after the discovery of HIV, there still is no cure or vaccine to combat this infection. Currently, HIV carriers have to commit to life-long adherence to medication to keep the virus suppressed. When this treatment is interrupted, the virus invariably re-emerges and attempts to create vaccines that protect from infection have not achieved their goal to date. Dr. Huthoff will illustrate the tricks that HIV has up its sleeve to outwit scientists, and where we are in its combat

Emerging Pathogens: the Battle with Dengue Virus

Dr Michela Mazzon
Over the past 20 years the world has seen an increase in new virus outbreaks, with societal, environmental & climatic changes all having important consequences on their emergence. Dengue virus represents one of the fastest spreading viruses, but no vaccines or antiviral therapies are available yet. Here, we illustrate how dengue virus avoids our immune defenses, challenges our most established vaccine & promotes its own replication & global spread. How will scientists meet the challenge?

Free Film Screening: INTERSTELLAR

After our event you are welcomed by The Roxy to stay for a free screening of the Oscar awarded movie Interstellar.

Rap History of the World

Philip Day
The Rap History of the World is an expression of the ‘Grand Narrative’ of Big History, in syncopated rhyming verse. This emerging field attempts to unify the history of the universe, life and humanity, while exploring themes such as the progressive emergence of complexity and evolutionary dynamics. The Rap History of the World takes the audience on a journey from the Big Bang to the present day, via the origins of matter, life, agriculture, civilization and the Scientific Revolution
