Exploring Eye Energetics through Metabolic Modelling of the Outer Retina

Dr. Stella Prins (Postdoctoral Researcher)
The cells in our body require energy to carry out their specialized functions effectively. They generate this energy from metabolic fuels, such glucose from the food we eat after it has been digested. When it comes to our eyes, the light-sensitive photoreceptor cells in the outer retina face a particularly high energy demand. The photoreceptors nestled on a tight monolayer of cells called the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Most photoreceptor energy demand is supplied by oxygen and glucose that is transported from the circulation through the RPE. To explore the energy-generation capacity of photoreceptors under different conditions and physiological constraints we have developed a metabolic model of the outer retina.
