Ever wondered about the night sky? What are stars made of? What will they become? From the lifecycle of stars to what's really going on inside black holes, we will guide you through the mysteries of outer space!

The Life and Death of Balls of Burning Gas (Stars) Billions of Miles Away

Dr Soheb Mandhai (Post-doctoral Research Associate, The University of Manchester)
The shiny dots observed in the sky are not fireflies squashed on a dome or former monarchs. They are stars, burning brilliantly and brightly across the universe with separations of tens to thousands of light years between them. The variations among stars are many. From the formation of nebulae and elements to zombie remnants such as neutron stars and black holes, in this talk, we will explore the conditions required to form stars and gain insight into the journey different stars take over their lifespans.

Black Holes: The Key to Understanding the Universe

Professor Jeff Forshaw (Professor of Particle Physics, Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Manchester)
Black holes are fascinating objects because of the way they force us to address the biggest questions in physics.

Jeff Forshaw will examine the consequences of trying to track the flow of information into and out of a black hole. Recent insights indicate that space and time are emergent features related to quantum entanglement, and in a fashion that bears some resemblance to quantum error correcting codes, such as are needed to make stable quantum computers.
