Fancy an evening of talking all things polar science, over a pint? Join British Antarctic Survey scientists to find out about the secrets held in Antarctic ice, how to detect whales from space, and a special chance to see some incredible footage from the recently escaped Larsen C Iceshelf! This is sure to be a seriously cool night (pun intended). They'll be a quick-fire quiz at the end and with the chance for everyone to win a polar bear adoption! All proceeds from ticket sales go towards this awesome quiz prize and supporting the UK Polar Network's outreach work.

Whales and their recovery from whaling in the Southern Hemisphere

Dr Jennifer Jackson (Molecular Ecologist at British Antarctic Survey)
My work is a mixture of genetics and population modelling to understand the connectivity of whale populations and their recovery from exploitation. Join me for my talk about the impact of whaling on whales in the Southern Hemisphere, with a particular emphasis on their common feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean, and the work we are doing to understand their levels of recovery and measure what their "baseline" levels of abundance were before exploitation.

Unlocking ancient climate secrets from polar ice cores

Dr Emilie Capron (Paleoclimatologist at British Antarctic Survey)
Like a prehistoric fly trapped in amber during dinosaurs’ days, relics of the Earth’s earlier climate -including air bubbles, volcanic ash and sea salts – end up trapped in ice. Join me to hear about how and what climate and environmental mysteries are revealed in ice cores drilled in Greenland and Antarctica. These unlocked secrets advance our understanding of the changes the Earth is capable of and thus, are crucial to improve predictions about our future climate. Come also to find out about work and life on ice core drilling camps set up in remote and cold white places!

What the flux is happening to Larsen C?

Ella Gilbert (PhD Student at British Antarctic Survey)
Ever wanted to know what it’s like to fly a plane at 50 feet through the gap between an ice shelf and an iceberg the size of Norfolk? Now you can! Live vicariously: come along for the ride of your life on my voyage of scientific discovery to Larsen C, on the Antarctic Peninsula. Join me as we measure the exchange of energy on 2017’s hottest celebrity ice shelf (that’s the flux part, if you were wondering). We’ll uncover what’s driving change, clap eyes on never-before-seen footage of the new megaberg, and gaze into an icy crystal ball to find out what’s next for Larsen.
