Addiction is a growing societal issue. Join us in a voyage exploring its multifaceted nature, as we listen to scientists who delve into the cellular mechanisms of drug exposure and clinicians who guide the recovery struggles of patients dealing with lasting mental effects. You will also have the opportunity to feel some dopamine hits, as you compete for that iconic Pint of Science glass.
Addictions – explaining them at the level of molecules and neurons
Professor Peter McNaughton
(Professor of Pharmacology)
Addiction to opioids is an increasing problem - in the US, opioid overdose is the leading cause of death under the age of 50, which is slowly becoming apparent in the UK. In my lab we aim to understand the molecular biology underlying opioid-induced hypersensitivity and tolerance. Understanding the molecular basis of addiction to opioids may open up pathways to future treatments for addiction. My talk will focus on how an abnormal opioid receptor is progressively upregulated with opioid exposure in mice, and how this abnormal receptor drives both hypersensitivity and tolerance.

Life before and after cannabis use
