It's National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW)!

Come and listen to two of our University of Southampton postdocs as they talk us through their research.

Two short talks will showcase some of the important work done by postdocs in Life Sciences (Building 85), followed by a careers discussion where our speakers will share their experiences of life as a postdoctoral researcher.

Free pizza and goody-bags will be provided at the event courtesy of Proteintech.

From flies to pixels

Dr Miguel Ramirez-Moreno (Post-doctoral research scientist)
My research career links to multiple model systems centered around the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. I have studied many physiological processes: development, circadian behaviour, tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration. A consistent theme has been extracting data from tissues through image analysis, progressively increasing the use of cutting-edge tools to achieve unbiased, automated performance. However, can we see the pixels for the forest? Are there transferable skills that prove valuable in future projects or alternative career paths? The solution is not an answer but a marathon.

Listening for better hearing

Dr Kate Hough (Postdoctoral research fellow)
Age-related hearing loss is one of the most prevalent health conditions affecting adults worldwide. Unmanaged hearing loss leads to isolation in older adults and is a risk factor for dementia. We are engaging with communities in Southampton to meet, listen and spark the conversation around hearing and brain health. We aim to raise awareness of the positive impact that prioritising hearing health can have on overall health and wellbeing. I will share our experiences surrounding the value of community engagement, and shaping research that could improve the lives of people with hearing loss.
