Smarter Chemistry with AI: Designing Safe Materials for a Better Planet
Dr Alexe Haywood
(Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Birmingham)
The European Green Deal aims to transform Europe’s industries toward a more sustainable future and reduce pollution. One part of this challenge is finding alternatives to chemicals and materials that can harm people or the environment. In this talk, I’ll show how we use AI to explore new possibilities in chemistry, helping us discover and design molecules that could lead to safer, more sustainable everyday products.
Life inside the dome
Colin Hutcheson
(Digital Co-ordinator at Thinktank Science Museum)
The planetarium at Thinktank Science Museum was the first purpose built digital planetarium in the UK, opening in Dec 2005. Since then, it has wowed over 1.5 million visitors by showing off the night sky, exploring atoms, and being entranced by fulldome artwork. However, to ensure the planetarium meets public expectations every day, there is much work required away from the public eye including: technical maintenance, research, coding and cleaning. Digital Co-ordinator, Colin Hutcheson will highlight what can be seen in the night sky and share some of his experiences of Life inside the Dome.
Detecting Exoplanets: Other worlds beyond our Solar System
Annelies Mortier
(Assoicate Professor in Astronomy, University of Birmingham )
Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars other than our Sun. Since the mid 1990's we have discovered over 6000 of these exotic worlds and the variety is mind boggling. In this talk I will take you on a short historical tour of how we go about detecting these exoplanets and showcase the wonderful variety of planets housed in the Universe.
