How in the world can neutron stars or Leerdammer cheese save the planet?  Come join us to hear how technology can solve our energy crisis. The function room is on the 1st floor; we apologise there is no wheel-chair access.

Superconductors: Can we reap and sow energy?

Can you conduct energy without losing any? How can we use what happens inside a neutron star to save our planet? Come and join Alex as he explains what "superconductivity" is. He will talk about how we can use superconductor materials to store energy and its use in energy saving technology for the future.

Saving the World with Leerdammer Cheese? Holey Energy Materials!

What does a substance that looks like Leerdammer Cheese have to do with the global warming crisis? How can something full of holes help us provide clean energy? Come join Jemma as she delves into the world of tiny holes with big applications: nanoporous materials. From supercapacitors to hydrogen storage, she’ll explore how these surprisingly ancient materials work, how we use them, and outline two of the biggest research areas in nanoporous materials: getting the size of the holes right, and actually trying to see them in the first place - neither of which are as easy as they might seem.
