From paintings to apologies, tonight we're exploring what makes us human. Can art make us kinder? What shapes our mental health? And are sorry really the hardest words? Join us for a night of big questions.
Can Art Change How We Treat Others?
Roberto Rozzi
(Postdoctoral Researcher)
Ever wondered whether art can shape how we treat others? Can revisiting historical narratives of hospitality affect how we treat migrants today? In an experiment at Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, Italy, subjects were exposed to frescoes depicting scenes of hospitality towards pilgrims. Exposure to these themes led to a nearly 50 percent increase in generosity toward today’s migrants.
Rethinking Mental Health Narratives
Nura Sidarus
(Lecturer in Psychology)
What is mental health? Why do some develop mental health problems? Is it because of differences in our brains? Our life history? The world around us? Come hear answers from different fields of study, and why it matters which narratives are favoured. We will then explore how to bring together different views, and what we learn about what helps to have healthier minds.
Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word
Shiri Lev-Ari
(Reader in Psychology)
Apologies are cheap. Anyone can apologize, whether or not they mean it. So how do people convince others that their apology is sincere? In this talk we will see how people modify their speech to sound more apologetic, and whether this really works.
