We will be looking at how a trip to the pub can inspire the science of heart disease. Viraj will be sharing his research inspired by the perfect pour to understand changes in fluid flow and how this can be used with AI to better understand cardiac health. The knees, they complain the loudest but are often overlooked. Richie will be sharing how we can use engineering to help those stiff joints.
Heart Vortices and Perfect Pours: What Blood Flow Can Learn from Beer and Wine
Viraj Patel
(PhD student)
When beer is poured, swirling vortices form and, depending on the way it is poured, can affect how much foam is produced. These swirling vortices are also seen as blood moves through the heart. When a patient has heart disease or uses a medical implant device, these blood flow patterns change in subtle but important ways. In my work, I use AI to study these tiny vortices, revealing how flow becomes more chaotic as the heart struggles. The science behind pouring the perfect pint may help us understand heart disease better.
Engineering to Save Your Knees
Professor Richie Gill
(Professor: Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath)
Knee osteoarthritis is a massive burden, yet for a long time, patients in the early stages had very few options—it was often a case of just waiting until the joint was bad enough for a total replacement. My work has focused on changing that by finding better ways to preserve the knee.
