How does fiction shape the way we view science? This evening, we’ll delve into the world of sci-fi to explore how both science and scientists are represented on screen. From dramatic depictions of nuclear fusion to the roles and visibility of women in science fiction, we'll unpack the stories that influence real-world perceptions. Plus, get creative and collage your own sci-fi poster!
“If she can see it, she can be it:” Women, Science and Screens
Dr Amy Chambers
(Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies, Manchester Metropolitan University)
Dr Amy C. Chambers will explore how women scientists are represented on screen and how important it is for science fictions to reflect and even advance upon the diversity in science research and practice fields. Women's representation in STEMM on screen can be limited not only in terms of volume and screentime but also by the roles and expectations of these women, e.g., they are restricted to 'soft' sciences and presented as caregivers. Phrases like: "if they can see it, they can be it" highlight the importance of ensuring that women (and marginalised people currently underrepresented in the sciences) can see a future in their chosen field and imagine themselves there. Believable, complex and diverse representation not only affects the sciences themselves but also broader public understanding of science and what an expert looks like.

Nuclear fusion, for reels or for real?
Thomas Hughes
(Postgraduate researcher)
An introduction into nuclear fusion from films and science fiction, will it ever be science fact, or is it just for the film reels? We'll have a look at fusion through the goggles of Doctor Octopus, Batman and others, and then see how their movie science is reflected in the real world. Covering the basics of how nuclear fusion works, some of its challenges and where it is heading in the future. Eventually we'll answer the question, will the power of the sun be in the palm our hands?

Sip 'n' sci-fi
Unleash your imagination in this hands-on creative exercise where you’ll design and collage your very own sci-fi poster. Whether you're into retro robots, cosmic landscapes, or futuristic cities, this is your chance to craft the world of tomorrow — no artistic experience needed, just big ideas and a love for the unknown!
