Bootlegger, 162-163 Fore Street,
Exeter EX4 3AT
Join us for an evening of thought-provoking talks that explore how biology shapes our lives and values. Should we sequence every baby’s DNA at birth? Can decolonising the anatomy curriculum improve public health? And what can our skin tell us about ageing and care?

What Decolonising of the Anatomy Curriculum could offer for the Public

Dr Hope Gangata (Senior Lecturer in Human Anatomy (University of Exeter))
The Anatomy discipline is all about how parts of the human body look like and how that structure helps assess and treat patients with different medical conditions. The talk will give you a brief snapshot of the British Colonisation of Anatomy, and will be echoed by Hope's experience of being trained as an Anatomist and Physiotherapist in largely a British colonial curriculum described in his autobiography book. The audience will be taken through the harms of the Colonisation of Anatomy, and recent efforts to Decolonise Anatomy and its potential benefits for the public.

Should we sequence the entire genetic code of all babies?

Dr Amicia Phillips (Postdoctoral research associate)
"From a single drop of blood, we can know a newborn’s entire genetic code, potentially diagnosing conditions early enough for life-changing treatment. But should we do this for all babies? Several countries, including England, are exploring this possibility.
While the genetic code can generate a lot of information, interpreting it can be difficult. Some information may indicate uncertain risks, limited treatments, or conditions that may only impact you later in life. Would knowing this from birth create more benefits or harms? This talk explores these questions. What would you decide?

Healing with Justice: How we can achieve equity in Healthcare Education

Naabil Khan (4th Year Medical Student and founder of Skin For All)
What does it truly mean to be equitable in healthcare education? The pandemic highlighted the glaring racial inequalities and systemic inequities that continue to plague our NHS. For many, the stats and slides presented during this time were a wake-up call, but for others, they are a reality long ignored. This isn’t just a discussion for medics; it's for all of us. We live in a society that is still grappling with the lasting effects of our colonial past, and these consequences continue to impact healthcare access and delivery. Join us as we explore the path forward and the role each of us can play in healing this divide.
