Are you curious about an attachable third thumb that is testing the boundaries of how our brain adapts to human augmentation? Perhaps you’re more interested in wearable technology and how we can diagnose Covid-19 by uploading audio recordings to the web? Explore these possibilities and more at our evening of biotechnology, where we’ll hear from amazing researchers Dani Clode and Dr Max Jakobs as they explore the interface between our bodies and our tech.

Assistive, augmentative and adaptive: Design considerations for the future body

Dani Clode (Senior Technical Specialist, Plasticity Lab, University of Cambridge)
As well as a Senior Technical Specialist, Dani is an augmentation and upper-limb prosthetics designer and a collaborator of the Alternative Limb Project. Dani’s work investigates the future architecture of our bodies, challenging the perception and boundaries of extending the human form. She will be discussing her latest prosthetic and augmentation work including the ‘Third Thumb’ which is currently being utilised in collaboration with neuroscientists at Cambridge University, investigating the brain’s ability to adapt to human augmentation.

Closing the Loop between machine and human learning in biology

Dr Max Jakobs (CEO & Co-founder of DeepMirror)
Combining what machines are good at (crunching big amounts of data) and what humans are good at (being creative) holds a lot of untapped potential. But machine learning in the Life Sciences is still mostly an expert domain. DeepMirror is changing this by building intuitive human-centric apps that deliver robust and trustworthy machine learning to power innovation in the Life Sciences and elevate the quality of life for all. Join Dr Max Jakobs for a chat about how machine learning can accelerate the development of new drugs and empower people to focus on the things that machines can’t do!
