Interested in the unbelievable power of blood tests and the possibility of predicting diseases just with blood? What about the state of healthcare and menstrual care for women and non-binary people, its pitfalls and possibilities? Then come along tonight to our fascinating talks.

Accessible menstrual care for all

Dr. Andrea Ford (Research Fellow in Biomedicine, Self and Society: Beyond Dis, Deanery of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences)
What is FemTech? And what does science have to do with it? Medical Anthropologist Andrea Ford from the University of Edinburgh's Usher Institute discusses the state of healthcare and medical research for women and non-binary people, which has some glaring problems. This new industry has great promise, such as collecting data from millions of people across the world on understudied topics -- and some pitfalls, such as potentially deepening other forms of inequality. She invites her audience to collectively imagine what the future of menstrual care could and should look like.

Genetics for predictions

Dr. Riccardo Marioni (Senior Research Fellow, Deanery of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences)
How much about human health can we learn from a single blood test? I will discuss how chemical additions to our DNA (called epigenetic modifications) can predict someone’s age, how much they smoke and drink (!), and be used to build a picture of their overall health. Importantly, I will show how these patterns can help to improve prediction of disease, leading to healthier ageing.
