Why do you speak confidently in another language after a couple of pints?
Have you ever watched the news and been worried by the numbers mentioned when talking about health issues?
And do you know about the inequalities in dementia healthcare?

Dementia and Inequalities – How can we Create an Equal Playing Field for Dementia Care?
Dr Clarissa Giebel
(Senior Research Fellow)
What are health inequalities and what is dementia ? And what are inequalities in dementia? Inequalities capture a broad spectrum, including where we live, what ethnic or gender background we are from, and how much money we earn. Inequalities in dementia care are a huge problem, leading to many unmet needs and poor health and well-being outcomes for the nearly 1 million people with dementia and their 700,000 unpaid carers across the UK. Join us to hear more about the work we're doing to try and create an equal playing field for dementia care.
The Inebriated Brain: Why You Can Speak German Better After Two Pints
Corey Ratcliffe
(PhD Student)
Historically, the brain was thought to be segregated by its functions: language area, face area, visual cortex. Whilst true to an extent, this is not the whole story, and connections between the parts of your brain that have typically been thought of as independent have led to unexpected, unpredicatable, and (mostly) unwelcome consequences across an array of cognitive and motor functions. This talk will use what we know about networks of the brain and the methods with which we explore them to answer a whole host of questions, most importantly: Why can I speak German better after two pints?!
What’s in a Number? Making Sense of Risk
Helen Clough
(Research Fellow in Statistics)
Every time we look at our smartphone, computer or television, we’re confronted by news stories involving statistics and numbers. We’ve all become familiar with this type of information during the pandemic. But, without proper context, it can be hard to make sense of what’s actually happening & make informed decisions about our health & what we can do to protect ourselves. Taken at face value, numbers can feel intimidating, might cause concern & can even mislead the reader. Helen will use topical examples to encourage you to question the numbers you read & better understand the risks we face.
