50 Years of Litter on Skye

Dr Tom Stanton (Research Fellow in Geography)
Josh Wheatley (Musician)
Josh is an experienced songwriter, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has had millions of streams of his songs, along with TV and Radio play on BBC, Channel 4 and more plus major Spotify placements.

Tom is a Research Fellow in Loughborough’s Department of Geography and Environment. His work looks at pollution in water environments, with a particular focus on material pollution. Tom is leading research investigating the environmental impacts of non-plastic fibres, such as cotton and wool, compared to microplastic fibres. He also works with communities to understand the nature and impacts of marine litter on Scottish coastlines.

Josh and Tom connected to score the music for a twenty-minute documentary about Tom's research, filmed by Loughborough University's press team. This panel will explore the creative processes that went into the production of a visual and audio output to communicate scientific research.

Meherunisa and Mark's creative collaboration

Dr Mark Platt (Reader in Nanotechnology)
Mehernusia Baig (PhD Researcher in Design and Creative Arts)
Meherunisa is a graphic designer and a current PhD candidate at Loughborough committed to reshaping the future of graphic design pedagogy. Her research involves bridging the gap between academia and industry. Collaborative by nature, Meherunisa seeks to pioneer novel teaching methods and pedagogical frameworks, aiming to empower future graphic designers. Driven by a vision of fostering a more adaptable and responsive educational environment, her aspiration is to leave an indelible mark on the realm of graphic design education.

Mark is a Reader of Nanotechnology within the chemistry department of Loughborough University. He grew the research and impact over the 10 years to become a global leader in the field, working with collaborators in a range of industries and disciplines. The research developed novel IP and in 2019/20 Mark and Rhush Maugi explored the market fit and opportunity. They launched a spinout company called “Figura Analytics” in 2021. Mark is the acting CTO of the company.

Together they have been working on a creative response to Mark’s research and have been invited to discuss their experience and process.
