Bristol has been at the heart of the engineering world for over 200 years, contributing heavily to the development of shipbuilding, railways, aviation, physics and more. From the SS Great Britain to Concorde, Bristol has produced some of the most iconic feats of engineering of the modern age.  We’ll be exploring some of that heritage and explore how Bristol plays its part in building our future.

Conservation and Maintenance of the Clifton Suspension Bridge

Trish Johnson (Clifton Suspension Bridgemaster and Chartered Civil Engineer )
Trish has been involved in various aspects of engineering throughout her career. She has worked in a Consultancy practice managing a number of Highways and Transportation offices, promoted Civil Engineering as Regional Director for the ICE, and maintained bridges as Head of Maintenance at the Severn River Crossing.
Six years ago, she took up the enviable role of Bridge Master on the Clifton Suspension Bridge. This high-profile role covers the major projects and maintenance of the bridge, the managing of the business including the visitor centre and the engagement with the public and Trustees.

SS Great Britain

Nicola Grahamslaw (Ship's Conservation Engineer)
Brunel’s 1843 SS Great Britain, constructed in Bristol's Great Western Dry Dock, was the world's first iron-hulled ocean-going screw-driven liner. Salvaged and returned to her original Bristol dry dock, the combination of ship and dock create a historic site which has since been almost continuously accessible to the public. . An ongoing program of research, adaptation and optimisation is reducing the carbon footprint of the SS Great Britain's conservation and securing the longer-term future of this incredible piece of engineering history.

The Bristol Aeroplane Company: from Boxkite to Concorde and Beyond

Aerospace Bristol is a museum that celebrates the aerospace engineering history of Bristol via the story of the Bristol Aeroplane Company and aircraft design and manufacturing in Filton. The museum is the home of the last Concorde to fly and showcases that amazing aircraft and the incredible technology developed to allow passengers to fly at twice the speed of sound.
