Do you know what is inside our ears? What are the specialized cells that allow us to hear, how have they evolved and how can we replace them if they are damaged? Learn about hearing and deafness in two fantastic talks, plus fun activities with the chance to win some prizes along the way!
Evolutionary Lessons on Hearing and Deafness
Dr. Marcela Lipovsek
(Group Leader @ The Ear Institute (UCL))
When the first vertebrates made the giant leap to life on land, they needed to come up with new ways to better hear airborne sounds. These involved changes in every aspect of hearing, from the appearance of the middle ear to cellular and molecular specialisations in the inner ear that allow the detection of high frequency sounds. Many of the genes involved in the evolutionary history of vertebrate hearing have also been linked to deafness. During this talk I will describe how the study of these evolutionary processes can teach us crucial lessons about hearing and deafness.
Defying the Odds: Can We Reverse Hearing Loss?
Dr. Elisa Martelletti
(Postdoctoral Researcher in Genetics of Deafness @ Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases)
Like a stealthy intruder, age-related hearing loss tiptoes into our lives, gradually dimming the melodies we hold dear. Sadly, a cure remains elusive, and while hearing aids and cochlear implants provide valuable support, they can't quite wield the magic needed to fully restore our youthful hearing. But fear not, for a symphony of hope beckons. Join me for an ear-resistible talk where I unveil an extraordinary breakthrough from our group, defying the odds and offering a tantalising glimpse into the possibility of reversing hearing loss.
