For years, the field of mental health has been largely barren of meaningful treatment advances. But now, scientists have new hope in the least likely of places: psychedelic drugs. Recent research suggests that certain psychedelic substances can help relieve anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction and the fear surrounding a terminal diagnosis.

This venue is wheelchair accessible.

Mental health and mind altering drugs

Dr Mourad Wahba (Research Fellow in Psychiatry, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust )
An estimated 1 in 6 in England have a mental health disorder and depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Psychiatry has come a long way,but still falls short of meeting the needs of all sufferers. We now must look beyond the familiar, transcend our limits and look for answers in previously disregarded places. Come along to discover how research into drugs such as psilocybin (the ‘magic’ in mushrooms), MDMA and ayahuasca (a psychedelic Amazonian brew) could reveal new therapeutic options for mental health disorders and challenge society’s perception of drugs in the process.

Psychoactive substance abuse

Dr William McGovern (Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences, Newcastle University )
Will’s research is focused on understanding the experiences of drug and alcohol users, how they and their voices are represented, and how services can be improved to better respond to their needs.
