Although many people believe they are aware of the impacts of climate change, only a few actually know what steps to take. Join us as we welcome Dr. Andy Russell, who will shed light on the risks and crucial adaptations needed to combat climate change in the UK. Following that, Professor Kate Spencer will unveil the alarming consequences of climate change on our coastal areas.

What will climate change look like in the UK?

Dr Andrew Russell (Lecturer in Environmental Science)
Climate change as a major threat to our societies has become ubiquitous in our lives over the last 20-30 years. But what impact will it have in the UK? Dr Russell has experience of looking at climate change and policies in universities and the civil service so will bring those perspectives together to think about what our climate future will look like. Using insights from national and global climate assessments we’ll consider the risks and adaptations required to minimise their impact through to the technologies required to minimise the climate changes we’ll likely see in our day-to-day lives.

Climate change in the UK and impact on our Coast

Professor Kate Spencer (Professor of Environmental Geochemistry)
Society has been disposing of its rubbish in landfill for many years. 'Historic landfills' pre-date modern environmental legislation meaning that the household, industrial and hazardous wastes they contain are not isolated from the surrounding environment. In England more than 1200 of these landfills are situated on our coast and sea level rise brings a new threat with the potential to erode and flood these sites releasing rubbish, plastics and asbestos into the marine environment. I will outline the scale of the problem in the UK and discuss some of the innovative solutions to this issue
