Making sense of mathematics and physics can seem like a daunting challenge. But don't panic! Take this journey to see how we've used mathematics and physics to make sense of the world around us. Let's take one small step towards understanding mathematics' most mysterious and almost mystical concept - INFINITY - and see how this journey will continue to take infinitely many more steps, and more, as we keep moving forward in our knowledge and understanding.
Integrable systems and Special Functions: How to actually calculate reality
Dr. Farrokh Atai
(Marie-Curie Research Fellow)
The equations that describe our reality can be broadly categorized as either "integrable" or "chaotic". Integrable systems are equations that can be solved exactly, and their solutions are expressed using special functions. I will give a brief outline of some of the equations that govern the behaviours at various scales: the microscopic scale that governs the quantum world, the macroscopic scale of our everyday experience, as well as the astronomical scale of cosmology. Finally, I will explain how we were able to calculate the solutions to these equations by using special functions
Counting past infinity
Asaf Karagila
(University Academic Fellow)
The concept of infinity can be mysterious, baffling, and almost mystical. But it's actually a central concept in modern mathematics.
So, how do mathematicians deal with infinity? How to count all the way to infinity and beyond? And what does it even mean that some infinities are larger than others?
Join me on a journey starting with one small step, and continuing for infinitely many steps, and more, as we understand these concepts from their mathematical perspectives.
