Having lived through the challenges of the pandemic, we are all asking ourselves – is COVID-19 still an issue? Why are scientists still researching and why booster vaccines are important? What is long COVID and how it may lead to health conditions later in life? What can be done to prevent/cure it?

Covid-19 uncovered

Gauri Thapa (Research Student, Medway School of Pharmacy)
Kelly da Costa (Postdoc, Medway School of Pharmacy)
Together we will address these questions and reflect on the global impact of COVID-19 and why it is still relevant to public health, the advances that have been made, why next generation vaccines are a good thing and how long COVID could be treated and brain conditions prevented.

We investigate interactions of viruses and their hosts. While Kelly looks at the interactions of the virus with the immune system, Gauri explores the association of the individual genetic make-up with COVID-19 illness severity and its impact on body systems such as the brain. Both of us have been focusing on SARS-CoV-2 from immunological responses to infection and vaccination to the long-lasting effects of COVID-19 known as long COVID with a spotlight on the increased risk of developing brain conditions.
