Crime, Evidence & What Happens After

TV shows can make forensic DNA look fast, flawless, and foolproof. In reality, it’s more complicated — and far more interesting. In this talk, Heather will take you behind the scenes of forensic science to explore how DNA from body fluids such as blood, saliva, and skin cells is examined and interpreted. We’ll look at how everyday activities can leave DNA behind, why finding someone’s DNA doesn’t necessarily mean they were at a crime scene, and how scientists decide what DNA evidence really means. Expect a few myths busted, some surprises, and a very different view of forensic DNA than you get on TV.

‘Death literacy’ is “the knowledge and skills that people need to make it possible to gain access to, understand, and make informed choices about end of life and death care options.”
Death literacy is about being able to have conversations about death and dying; knowing how to care for someone who is dying; understanding what to do when someone has died and knowing where and who to go to for support if you are caring for a dying person. 95% of end-of-life care is provided by family, friends and communities, not by professionals.
