Join us for a criminology themed night focusing on exploring the psychology and the psychosocial determinants leading to the committal of violent crimes.

Dr Mark Freestone, who has consulted on numerous hit TV shows including 'Killing Eve' and 'Screw', gives a talk on how misery may lead to violent tendencies in individuals while violence reduction nurse Michael Carver explores the reasons behind the increasing levels of adolescent gun and knife crime and what can be done to combat this.

Rediscovering misery: how despair influences violent ideation

Dr. Mark Freestone (Reader in Mental Health)

Between 2004 and 2020 the Centre for Psychiatry at Queen Mary conducted studies looking at a possible link between mental health and sympathies for violent radical action. Instead of trauma, we found that the strongest factor associated with sympathies was ‘dysthymia’, a condition indicating chronic low-mood often longer-lasting than depression and associated with hopelessness, fatigue and low self-esteem. In this talk I want to explore the lost idea of ‘misery’ as a social problem for which healthcare has been asked to find the solution
