CSI and geosciences - two words that barely anyone would associate with each other at first glance. However, they might be more closely linked than you would expect. Join us at this event to find out how earth scientists use their toolbox in the work of forensics and help solve mysteries from the ancient past to the present day world.

Lost at sea: tracking missing planes and rubber ducks

Dr Erik van Sebille (Lecturer in Climate Change and the Environment at the Grantham Institute)
Most of our planet’s surface is ocean, and it’s in constant motion. Currents and waves move debris and pollution around the globe. But these currents are unpredictable, making it very difficult to track the debris.
In this talk, Erik will show how oceanographers go about simulating movement of ocean currents, and how they use those simulations to track the debris from Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, the Fukushima tsunami, and the millions of tons of plastic pollution that enter our oceans every year.

'Cutting edge’ science – forensic anthropology and the analysis of knife marks in bone

Dr Heather Bonney (Collections Manager (Human Remains and Repatriation) at Natural History Museum)
Forensic Anthropologists are specialists in human anatomy who work with decomposed or fragmented human remains. Come and hear about how bone reacts to trauma, why pigs and plastic are terrible cadaver models, and how our research using 3D microscopy can identify the tools that make marks in bone.
