"Get the hell out of there now, before it's too late!" – Pierce Brosnan’s unique line in the volcano drama ‘Dante’s Peak’ sure is catchy and intense, but in real life this is not the sentence anyone wants to hear from a volcanologist. This evening, we will learn about how actual scientists explore volcanoes and use their findings to prepare society for future eruptions. *This event is on the first floor, only accessible by stairs*

Volcanoes: What lies beneath?

Dr James Hammond (Lecturer in Geophysics, Birkbeck University of London)
Dramatic volcanic eruptions spew vast amounts of molten rock onto the Earth’s surface, constantly changing the way our planet looks. However, have you ever thought about what is happening below the surface? Where does this molten rock come from and what path does it take through the layers of the Earth? Wouldn’t it be handy to be able to take an X-ray of the inside to find out what is there? In this talk, we will explore the tools geophysicists use to do exactly that, using earthquakes, explosions, and even lightning to build 3D images of the inside of a volcano.

Volcanoes and Society

Professor Steve Sparks (Professorial Research Fellow, Earth Sciences, University of Bristol)
Ever wondered what would happen to mankind if a mega-volcanic eruption occurred? Steve, one of the most prolific and influential volcanologists of recent decades, will be talking about small to enormous, historic, recent and future volcanic eruptions, and how they (might) influence our modern, increasingly vulnerable global society. After this evening, you will not only never be mispronouncing Eyjafjallajökull again, but also have a decent idea about how we can properly plan for and respond to the next volcanic crisis to avoid severe environmental and societal consequences.
