Then at 7pm, prepare for 45 minutes of geeky humor and catchy tunes with Helen Arney, the UK’s premier science songstress. From history to the unsung women of science, she’ll have you laughing, learning, and maybe even singing along - ukulele in hand. Don’t miss it!

Helen Arney: Voice Of An Angle

Helen Arney (Songwriter, comedian, musical theatre writer)
Join the UK’s premiere geek songstress for 45 minutes of stand-up and songs about natural history, actual history, and an introduction to some of the most underestimated women in science and maths. As seen on BBC2, Channel4 and Discovery, science songwriter Helen Arney will use everything in her power to make you laugh, learn, and leave you singing along to infinity (and beyond).

WARNING: contains ukulele.

Helen is a songwriter and recovering stand-up, having appeared on TV, radio and stages across the world with her unique mix of comedy, songs and science. Since electrifying Sandi Toksvig on QI, serenading Jon Snow on Channel4 News and co-creating science-comedy phenomenon Festival of the Spoken Nerd, Helen now writes musical theatre that puts women and science centre-stage, and has filled several notebooks with rhymes for Uranus (none of which are printable here).

No Laughs Were Harmed in the Extinction of This Bird

Dr Neil Gostling FLS (Associate Professor in Evolution and Palaeobiology. Evolutionary-developmental biologist and palaeobiologist )
Get ready for a wild ride into the world of the dodo - a bird that’s far more than just a punchline in extinction jokes. In this talk, our brilliant Linnean Society fellow Neil Gostling will guide us through the latest revelations from his groundbreaking research on the dodo, unraveling centuries of myths, mistakes, and misunderstandings.

Forget the slow, clumsy bird you think you know - this creature was an active, fast-moving forest dweller, adapted perfectly to its unique environment. With the dodo’s true place in the pigeon family now firmly established, prepare for a fun, eye-opening dive into the science that’s rewriting its story.

From challenging 400 years of confusion to exploring what we can learn from the dodo’s tragic fate, this talk promises to be a thrilling mix of historical intrigue, modern tech, and evolutionary wisdom. Buckle up - you won’t look at extinct animals the same way again!

Dr Neil Gostling FLS is a lecturer in Evolution and Palaeobiology. He is an evolutionary-developmental biologist (Evo-Devo) by training and a palaeobiologist by research. He has used this diverse background to answer questions from the evolution of animals to the development of root systems. Currently, Neil is working to address questions about the origins of avian flight, and the diversity of dinosaurs in southern England. Neil contributes to the teaching of evolution and development across the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences and leads the MRes Programme in Evolution.
