Dr AI Will See You Now

AI is seen by healthcare leaders as key to future healthcare delivery, potentially benefiting quality and outcomes of care, and service efficiency and sustainability. However, there is limited real world evidence for this. This talk will first address why real world evaluation matters, then present findings from our research on implementation of AI tools and their impact on service delivery, cost-effectiveness, and staff and patient experiences. Finally, we will discuss the implications for future implementation of AI tools at scale in NHS services and explore priorities for future research.

Much like the microscope once revealed the invisible, Clinical AI now extracts deep insights from vast datasets. The next frontier is Generalist Clinical AI (GCAI) - systems capable of human-level reasoning across diverse medical tasks. While full realisation is still ahead, significant strides exist. I will illustrate these advancements in areas including mental health, chronic disease, neurology, oncology, and critical care, exploring how wearables integrate with clinical records. Finally, I will address key challenges and my vision for how GCAI will transform medicine.
